Free Graphics Software
If you publish with print on demand or PDF formats, or just want to make a book cover, chances are you will want some sort of image/photo manipulation software. Adobe Photoshop is easily the leader of the pack, however Photoshop is expensive.
There are several free or less costly alternatives that might work just as well. Here are a few I have found:
Pixia
PhotoPlus
The Gimp
ArcSoft Photo Studio (Win.)
ArcSoft Photo Studio X (Mac)
My advice is to try the free ones first and see it they will work for you.

I've had an ArcSoft (PhotoImpressions) program that came with the camera I've used to make more than 150 covers. I don't know if the ones offered are comparable, but it's worked very well for me.
You can use most programs to make black and white pictures for POD book interiors (color is VERY expensive in POD) by simply taking the photo to the shop and reducing the saturation to zero, then using the contrast to sharpen the image. It prints slightly darker that the image appears on the document, so bear that in mind.
